What Are The Symptoms Of A Blocked Chakra?

When your root chakra is blocked you might experience some of the symptoms below:

  • Emotional symptoms like lack of stability resulting in feeling unsafe, anxious, depressed and fearful. You might also struggle with panic attacks or low self-confidence.
  • Physical symptoms like lower-back and foot pain, cold hands and feet, pelvic pain, sciatica, hemorrhoids, constipation and bowel problems, weight gain or weight loss, fatigue and trouble sleeping.

How To Unblock Your Root Chakra ?

  1. Spending time in nature

The root chakra is all about being grounded. By grounding you get into contact with the Earth which allows you to become solidly real and present.

Go outdoors and get in touch with the Earth. And I mean literally: touch the ground. If you can, try walking barefoot on grass or on sand. Have a relaxing stroll in a park, on the beach or simply sit on a bench with feet resting firmly on the ground. Enjoy the bliss of sun on your face or gentle summer rain awaking all these wonderful earthy scents. Take a look at the magnificent nature around you and feel infinite gratitude for it.

  1. Meditation

Root chakra meditation is very much like any regular meditation, except when meditating for Muladhara you should concentrate only on this chakra and its area in your body. The meditation below is pretty straightforward but can be very effective:

  • Sit with your spine straight. Close your eyes and inhale deeply. Focus on your breath as you breathe in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Relax all your muscles.
  • When feeling relaxed, focus entirely on the area at the base of your spine.
  • Take a note of any tension or tightness in this area.
  • Now imagine a ball of red light rising at the base of your spine. Feel how it expands, bringing the sense of warmth and relaxation around the area. Stay in this feeling for around 5 minutes. If you wish you might add an extra element to it, chant root chakra’s seed sound of “lam” several times.
  • When you are ready, you can slowly open your eyes and gently smile. Sit still for a couple of minutes before going about your daily routine.

If you are spending time in nature, you can try a walking meditation, where you are aware and mindful of each and single step.

  1. Breathing

Breathing can help you connect with your body and the present moment and can be great for realignment of your root chakra. There are many different techniques you might want to explore and try (like diaphragmatic breathing or alternate nostril breathing).

I would like to share with you a very easy breathing technique I have been using for a while. It has helped me immensely to stay mindful and relaxed.

First of all, recognize the process of breathing. You will be surprised to find out how many people take it for granted and live on “auto-pilot” with a very shallow breath.

Noticing your breath is a great start.

Now: breathe in through your nose for a count of four and breath out for a count of six (also through your nose). If you are struggling, make it shorter, but make sure your breath out is longer than the breath in. Ideally, when breathing you are using your diaphragm.

In the beginning you might find it unnatural or challenging. But try doing these exercise for a couple of minutes, repeating it a few times a day. You should notice amazing results after a while.

  1. Yoga poses

Yoga helps connect the spiritual and physical elements in your body through poses. Here are some poses that can cleanse the root chakra. Hold each pose for five, slow deep breaths.

  • Bridge pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)
  • Chair pose (Utkatasana)
  • Warrior II pose (Virabhadrasana II)
  • Mountain pose (Tadasana)
  • Standing Forward Bend Pose (Uttanasana)

    1. Grounding exercises and activities

Jumping up and down – be like a child, let everything become loose, when you jump down feel like you are sinking into the Earth.

Stamping – stamp one foot a few times and then the other making firm contact with the ground.

Kicking – it will remove tension from your legs (just don’t kick into anything solid!) – you might try doing it laying on a bed.

Keeping the balance – when on a bus or train, try standing without holding on to anything. With your knees slightly bent try keeping the balance. Notice where your center of gravity is.

Last but not least: foot massage, helps relieve tension and is particularly useful for grounding.

    1. Affirmations

The power of affirmations is through repetition. You might want to say them out loud, standing for instance in front of a mirror. You might choose to repeat them in your head or simply write them down. You could also mediate on the affirmation. Here are some affirmations to use for your root chakra:

    • I am grounded.
    • I am safe.
    • I am secure.
    • I am at peace with here and now.
    • All my safety needs are met.
    • The Earth supports me.
    • Today I am relaxed, steady, and secure.
    • I feel happy and safe in my home.

      1. Embracing the color red

A very simple yet powerful trick. Surround yourself with the color red: put on a red shirt, hat, or favorite scarf. Maybe add some red lipstick? Playing with this color is a fun way to activate your root chakra. This will change your vibration and shift your frequency.

      1. Diet

Following a healthy diet helps to keep all your chakras balanced. What you feed your body is what you feed your chakras. Reducing the amount of processed foods, sugar, salt and saturated fats will support your whole chakra system.

To nourish your root chakra, make sure to include in your menu:

      • Protein-rich foods like eggs, beans, nuts, tofu, lean meat. They will help to build strong muscles and bones to support the whole body and will give you strength.
      • Root vegetables (they grow in the soil, thus are grounding). Try beets, potatoes, garlic, carrots, turnips and parsnips.
      • Red foods like tomatoes, red bell peppers, strawberries, and raspberries.
