If you are interested in studying Reiki here is everything you need to know about the process.

What Are The Levels of Reiki?

There are three levels of Reiki:

    1. Reiki Level 1 (Shoden in Japanese) – The First Degree (Beginner)

This is an introduction to Reiki energy. The class is taught by a Reiki Master. During this training you will learn history of Reiki, its principles, hand positions to perform self-Reiki and to give Reiki to others.

But most importantly, during shoden training you will be initiated to Reiki energy in an attunement ceremony. You will receive three attunements.

After completing Level 1, you will be encouraged to perform self-Reiki first. Practice self-treatments at least once a day for 21 days*. You might want to do it twice a day (in the morning and in the evening), combined with reciting Reiki principles (to find out more, check the post about Reiki principles).

*21 days refers to the time Dr Mikao Usui (Reiki’s founder) spent mediating at Mount Kurama.

Over this time, you might observe a progressive strengthening of Reiki as you use it. You might experience emotional reactions, vivid dreams, you might notice significant changes taking place in you. During the first few weeks, you might find useful keeping a journal in which you will write down all these experiences.

After Reiki 1 you will be able to treat yourself, family, friends, pets and plants (you cannot however work with clients, to do so you will need to take Reiki Level 2 course).

When you decide to attend a course (any level) make sure to choose a compassionate, trustworthy, and knowledgeable Reiki Master. You may attend the course in person. Many Reiki Masters offer an online course as well.

What are the requirements to attend Reiki 1?

No previous knowledge or training is required to attend Reiki Level 1. It is more about being open to a spiritual growth and taking the first step to work with Reiki energy.

Reiki 1 course duration: The course usually takes one day or is taught over the weekend.

Reiki 1 course cost: Prices differ, on average in the US you might expect to pay about $200-$300 for a in person training or anything between $30-$300 for online classes.

In the UK prices range between £100-£200.

      1. Reiki Level 2 (Okuden in Japanese) – The Second Degree (Practitioner)

During this training you will deepen your techniques and your energy channels will profoundly open.

During okuden training you will be introduced to Reiki symbols. You will be taught how to use them. The symbols will help you enhance and focus Reiki energy.

There are five reiki symbols. During Reiki 2 you will be taught 3 of them.

You will learn how to perform distance healing (sending Reiki energy beyond time and space). You will also receive one attunement. After this training you would be able be a Reiki practitioner and if you choose to do so, you will able to attend clients.

What are the requirements to attend Reiki 2?

You need to complete Reiki Level 1 before taking Reiki Level 2 course.

Reiki 2 course duration: The course usually takes one intensive day or is taught over 2 days.

Reiki 2 course cost: Prices differ; on average in the US you might expect to pay about $200-$500 for a in person training or anything between $30-$300 for online classes.

In the UK prices range between £150-£300.

        1. Reiki Level 3 (Shinpiden in Japanese) – The Third Degree (Master/ Teacher)

The third-degree training will allow you to become a Reiki Master. This level can be divided into two parts. In the first one you will become a Reiki Master, in the second one you will learn how to teach Reiki and upon completion you will become a Reiki Master Teacher.

Only Reiki Masters can teach and attune others to Reiki.

What are the requirements to attend Reiki 3?

You need to complete Reiki Level 1 and Reiki Level 2 before taking Reiki Level 3 course.

Reiki 3 course duration: The course usually takes one intensive day or is taught over 2 days.

Reiki 3 course cost: Prices differ, on average in the US you might expect to pay about $200-$500 for a in person training or anything between $30-$300 for online classes.

In the UK prices range between £150-£300.

How Long Do You Have To Wait Between Reiki Courses?

In general, it is recommended to wait at least three months between Reiki 1 and Reiki 2. However, if you are devoted to practicing Reiki on daily basis, you might be ready to take Reiki 2 course after 21 days. You will simply feel it is the right time to move along on your spiritual journey.

To take the Reiki Master course you should wait at least one year from the time you had your first attunements during Reiki 1.

How Should I Prepare For A Reiki Course?

As during the course you will receive attunements, it is worth spending some time preparing yourself spiritually. The guidelines below are optional however you might find them helpful at enhancing your experience:

        • For a week before the ceremony try to spend more time meditating and focusing on things which uplift you.
        • A couple of days before the course try to avoid alcohol or recreational drugs.
        • You might try to detox your body by eating only whole foods (like fresh vegetables or fruits). Some people find it beneficial to fast one day before the ceremony.

What Is The Attunement Ceremony In Reiki?

The attunement ceremony distinguishes Reiki from other energy healing practices.

The attunement ceremony is a spiritual process conducted by a Reiki Master.

Through the attunement ceremony you acquire the ability to work with Reiki effectively. Once you are attuned to Reiki energy, you will be able to connect with it whenever you choose. This power stays with you for the rest of your life.

Before the ceremony the Reiki Master will explain to you what to expect during the session.

There might be some gentle music playing in the background, with lights, candles, incense etc. creating the mood.

You will be seated with your eyes closed, with enough room for the Reiki Master to walk easily around you.

The Reiki Master will be drawing in the air the Reiki symbols behind you and in front of you. He or she will be walking around you in a full circle.

The attunement process takes about 20-30 minutes. During this time you may see images, you may feel different sensations in your body, you may fall asleep or… you may feel nothing. In any case, don’t worry, the process works, and you are being attuned to the universal source of life force energy!

Once the attunement process is complete the Reiki Master will indicate it by taping your right shoulder or by ringing a bell.

One important thing to remember: it is not the Reiki Master who attunes you, he or she is only a “conveyor” through which energy manifests. It is your body that chooses the amount of energy to draw in.

The attunement has a profound impact on the mind, body, and spirit. It activates all your seven chakras.
