Like other spiritual practices, Reiki has its own set of principles (or percepts).

The Five Principles Of Reiki Are As Follows:

Just for today:

  • I will not be angry
  • I will not worry
  • I will do my work honestly
  • I will be grateful for my blessings
  • I will be kind to others

The wording of these principles is translated from the original Japanese, and you might come across different variations and phrasing. Their core however stays the same.

How Reiki Principles Can Help You Improve Your Well-Being?

Reiki percepts can help you bring peace and love to your life. They will teach you the importance of the present moment. Because the truth is, ‘now’ is all we have…

If you haven’t been practicing mindfulness, chances are, you are pretty stressed throughout your day. Every day. Your mind keeps on telling you stories which add even more stress and pressure. ‘I can’t do this’, ‘I don’t have enough time’, ‘It’s too much, I can’t take it anymore’, etc. If any of this sounds familiar, take a moment to ‘take a moment’.

Pause. Take a few deep breaths. Relax.

Hopefully below you will find some inspiration to change one or two things in your life. And who knows, maybe you will be encouraged to embark on a spiritual journey?

The Reiki principles start with the words: ‘Just for today…’.

Today. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. What matters is the present moment.

1. Just for today I will not be angry

In the morning the commitment to this principle may sound easy to carry off. But then as the day goes on…life happens. A negative event occurs which triggers your reaction. And here comes the anger.

Whenever you feel it, simply recognize the feeling. Try to take a step back from the situation and just observe it. Don’t judge yourself or feel guilty. Allow the feeling of anger to pass. Let go of anger instead of suppressing it.

When feeling angry, try to take a few deep breaths until you feel the pressure release.

But let’s be honest, at first the idea of observing anything or starting to breathe when fuming with anger might not sound too “helpful” (to put it mildly…).

So here is a simple exercise to help you cope with anger:

Before going to bed, try to reflect on your day and think of situations or behaviors which triggered it. After identifying them decide how you would like to react when they reoccur. Visualize yourself calm and peaceful.

2. Just for today I will not worry

When worrying you believe in all worst-case scenarios your mind is feeding you with. And you are living in the future. It is time to shift your attention to the present moment. Trust the universe and have peace in mind and heart. Allow the wisdom of Reiki to guide you through life’s peaks and valleys.

3. Just for today I will do my work honestly

This principle can be read literally: work honestly, do your job 100%, work with purpose. But it is much more than this. It is about being honest with yourself. When you are doing things which don’t bring you joy, when you are not following your dreams, not using your talents you are dishonest with yourself.

Discover or “dedust” your dreams and real-life purpose, be true to your heart.

4. Just for today I will be grateful for my blessings

Being grateful is a wonderful way to start your day. This principle helps you to notice the countless blessings you have received. You might be caught in a constant race to acquire more and more. This race is called ‘I will be happy when…’. ‘I will be happy when I get the promotion’, ‘I will be happy when I buy this car’, ‘I will be happy when I go for holidays’ and so on.  But this is the race you will never win, around the corner, there will be another thing which is supposed to make you happy. Drop out of this race. Or at least pause for a moment. Appreciate what you already have. When you start counting your blessings, you will notice you start feeling happy NOW.

5. Just for today I will be kind to others

I would add, be kind to others but start with yourself! Be kind, loving and compassionate to your beautiful self. Then extend this feeling towards every living thing. You might find it challenging at first as I can hear you ask: what do you mean ‘every living thing’ – is my bully boss or my cheating partner on the list ? My answer will be simply: YES.

Even if it sounds impossible today, with time and practice you will notice amazing improvements in your life.

If this principle resonates with you, discover the wonderful practice of Metta meditation also known as “a loving-kindness” meditation. Practicing Metta together with Reiki principles will take your kindness and compassion to a new level.

TIP

I like to recite Reiki principles as positive statements, so here is a slightly modified wording of the principles:

For all of today, I will love.

For all of today I will trust.

For all of today I will do my work honestly.

For all of today I will be grateful for my blessings.

For all of today I will be kind to others.

How Can You ‘Practice’ Reiki Principles?

You can choose to be seated or lying down, with your eyes closed. Try to repeat the principles a few times. You may say them out loud or in your mind. You can recite them just after you wake up and (or) in the evening before going to bed. You can have them displayed in your room, or you can simply carry them with you (for instance in your wallet). There is no right or wrong way of doing it. You should practice them in a way that resonates with you.

Bottom line:

At first it might feel quite overwhelming to practice all the principles at once. I would encourage you to pick just one and repeat it as your mantra throughout the day. Get used to the idea of “living” your day according to a positive and loving guidance. Then, when the process feels more natural, you can introduce another principle, and then another one until you feel comfortable reciting all the principles.

When you start using the principles as your daily practice, you will notice an amazing shift in your mindset. You will be more loving, peaceful, and compassionate. Enjoy the bliss!
